About GPA Calculator
GPA is a credit-weighted average, not a plain one. Each letter grade maps to grade points — A is 4.0, B is 3.0 and so on — which are multiplied by the course's credit hours. The total quality points divided by the total credits gives the GPA, so a four-credit course moves your average twice as far as a two-credit one.
Most US institutions use plus and minus modifiers worth 0.3, giving values such as 3.7 for an A- and 3.3 for a B+. A few cap A+ at 4.0 rather than 4.3, so check your school's scale if you are close to a threshold.
Frequently asked questions
- How is a weighted GPA different?
- This calculator weights by credit hours. Honours or AP weighting, which adds a point for harder classes, varies by school.
- What if a course is pass/fail?
- Leave it out. Pass/fail courses usually count toward credits earned but not toward GPA.
- Can I calculate a cumulative GPA?
- Yes, add a row representing your previous terms with the total credits and their average grade.
