About GPA Calculator
This GPA calculator works out a credit-weighted average, not a plain one. Each letter grade maps to grade points, from A at 4.0 down to F at 0.0, including plus and minus grades such as A- at 3.7 and B+ at 3.3. Those points are multiplied by each course's credits, so a four-credit course moves your GPA twice as far as a two-credit one.
To get the final number, the calculator divides total quality points (grade points times credits) by total credits. For example, an A (4.0) in a 4-credit course plus a B+ (3.3) in a 3-credit course gives (4.0x4 + 3.3x3) / 7 = 3.69. Use it at the end of a term to check your GPA, or while planning a term to see how a grade would move your average.
Worked example
Say you took four courses: Biology (4 credits, B), Calculus (4 credits, A), Writing (3 credits, A-) and PE (1 credit, C). Multiply each grade's points by its credits, add them up and divide by total credits.

41.1 ÷ 12 = 3.425. If you simply averaged the four grades you would get 3.175, because the 1-credit C would count as much as a 4-credit A.
Grade scale used
This calculator uses the common 4.0 plus/minus scale: A and A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0. Some schools count A+ as 4.3 or skip minus grades, so check your school's handbook if your number is slightly off.
It weights by credit hours only and does not add honors or AP bonuses. Many schools use +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP or IB as a common convention, but the rules vary by school, so check your own scale. The GPA guide shows how to apply one.
Frequently asked questions
- How is GPA weighted by credits?
- Each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours, then the total is divided by total credits, so higher-credit courses count for more.
- What if a course is pass/fail?
- Leave it out of this calculator. Pass/fail courses usually count toward credits earned but not toward GPA.
- Can I calculate a cumulative GPA?
- Yes. Add a row for your previous terms using their combined credits and average grade, alongside your current courses.
- Does this use plus and minus grades?
- Yes, it includes A+ through F with plus and minus modifiers, each worth 0.3 of a grade point.
