About Typing Speed Test
Words per minute is measured in standardised five-character words, so a 300-character passage counts as sixty words no matter how long the actual words are. That keeps results comparable between tests.
Average typing speed sits around 40 words per minute; touch typists usually land between 65 and 80. Accuracy matters more than raw speed for most work, because fixing a typo costs far more time than typing the character correctly did.
Frequently asked questions
- How is WPM calculated?
- Characters typed correctly divided by five, scaled to a full minute.
- What is a good typing speed?
- Around 40 words per minute is average, 65 to 80 is a confident touch typist, and over 100 is fast.
- Do mistakes count against me?
- Yes. Incorrect characters lower your accuracy and are not counted towards your speed.
