About Sales Tax Calculator

This sales tax calculator adds tax to a net price, or works backwards to pull the tax out of a total that already includes it. Adding tax is simple multiplication: multiply the net price by one plus the rate. Working backwards is where people go wrong, because you cannot just subtract the percentage from the total.

To find the tax inside a total, the calculator divides by one plus the rate to get the net price, then subtracts. For example, at an 8% rate a $108 gross price contains $8 of tax, not $8.64. The gap looks small on one item but adds up across an invoice, which is why extract mode matters for reconciling receipts.

Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. Switch this calculator to 'Extract tax from price' and it does that step for you.

Can I calculate tax on multiple items at once?
Yes, enter a quantity and the calculator shows per-item and total net, tax and gross amounts.
Are local tax rates built in?
No. Rates vary by city, county and country, so enter the combined rate that applies to your purchase.
