Breakout
Bounce the ball off your paddle to smash every brick without letting it past you.
Starts in your browser. Instructions are below.
Controls
- Keyboard and mouse
- Left and Right arrow keys move the paddle. You can also move it with your mouse.
- Touch
- Drag your finger across the game area and the paddle follows.
Scoring and how to win
- Each brick hit scores 10 points times the current level, so bricks are worth more the further you get.
- Clearing a level adds a bonus of 100 times the level number, then a new wall appears with more rows and a slightly faster ball.
- You start with 3 lives and can carry up to 5. Letting the ball past the paddle costs a life; the game ends at zero.

How to play Breakout
- 01Move the paddle with the mouse, the left and right arrow keys, or by dragging on a touch screen.
- 02Keep the ball in play and aim it at the remaining bricks.
- 03Clear every brick to reach the next level. Levels never end, each one is faster with tougher bricks, and you lose a life each time the ball gets past the paddle.
About Breakout
Breakout is about angle control. Hitting the ball with the edge of the paddle sends it out sharply, while the center returns it almost straight up, so where you make contact matters more than how fast you move.
The efficient approach is to open a channel up one side of the brick wall and let the ball ricochet along the top, clearing rows without your help. It takes patience to set up and clears a level in seconds once it lands.
Frequently asked questions
- How many lives do I get?
- Three to start, plus one bonus life for each level you clear (up to five). Losing all of them ends the game.
- Does it get harder?
- Yes. Levels are endless: each one speeds the ball up, adds rows, and mixes in bricks that take two or three hits. Bricks and level bonuses are worth more on higher levels.
- Can I play Breakout on a phone?
- Yes, drag your finger along the bottom of the screen to move the paddle.
