About Retirement Calculator

Retirement projections are compound interest with regular deposits. The uncomfortable truth in the maths is how much the early years matter: a contribution made at thirty has decades to compound, while the same amount at fifty barely doubles. Starting earlier beats contributing more, almost every time.

Inflation is the figure most projections hide. At three percent, prices roughly double every twenty-four years, so a headline balance of a million in thirty years buys about what four hundred thousand does now. The widely quoted 4% rule — withdrawing four percent of your balance in the first year, then adjusting for inflation — is shown here as a rough sustainable income estimate, not a guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

What return should I assume?
A diversified stock-heavy portfolio has historically returned about 7% a year after inflation, but no return is guaranteed.
What is the 4% rule?
A rule of thumb that withdrawing 4% of your balance in year one, adjusted for inflation after, has historically lasted about thirty years.
Does this include tax?
No. Tax treatment depends on your account type and country, so treat the figures as pre-tax.
