About Hours Calculator
Payroll runs on decimal hours, not hours and minutes. Seven hours and forty-five minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45 — a mistake that quietly costs money every pay period. Both formats are shown here so you can check one against the other.
Unpaid breaks are subtracted before the total, and a shift that ends before it starts is treated as crossing midnight. For overtime, most US employers follow the FLSA rule of time-and-a-half beyond forty hours in a week, which applies to the weekly total rather than any single day.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
- Divide the minutes by 60. Forty-five minutes is 0.75 hours.
- Does it handle night shifts?
- Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift is counted as running past midnight.
- Is overtime calculated?
- The totals are straight hours. Apply your own overtime rule to anything over your weekly threshold.
