About Hours Calculator
This hours calculator adds up shifts from start and end times, subtracts unpaid breaks, and shows the total both in decimal hours and in hours and minutes. Payroll runs on decimal hours, not hours and minutes: seven hours and forty-five minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45, a mistake that quietly costs money if you convert by hand.
If an end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats the shift as crossing midnight and adds 24 hours before subtracting the break. It does not apply overtime rules automatically, since those vary by employer and country, so check your own policy against the totals shown here.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
- Divide the minutes by 60. Forty-five minutes is 0.75 hours, which is how this calculator's decimal total works.
- Does it handle overnight shifts?
- Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is counted as running past midnight automatically.
- Does this calculator include overtime pay?
- No. It totals straight hours and gross pay at your entered rate. Apply your own overtime rule to anything over your weekly threshold.
- Can I total more than one shift?
- Yes, add a row for each shift and the calculator sums the decimal hours, hh:mm total and gross pay across all of them.
